Garden Critters

The summer is slowly coming to an end (hooray!). The excessive heat has taken its toll my daughter's/our garden, despite watering every day.  The weeds are knee-high and we have decided to let it go, especially since we are both fearful of stepping on a snake!   I recently went out to cut the last of the okra, which I absolutely LOVE!!   Most any Southerner would agree, it is one of our favorite veggies!

Okra starts out as a pretty flower.

After the flowers fall off, you have pretty little buds!

Then they grow to this size and are ready to harvest.

After bending down to move the basket along, I stood up and came face-to-face with this!  And I do mean it was literally right in my face!  Eeewww!

What kind of creepy, crawly critters are they?  They seriously made my skin crawl.... Those orange critters especially gave me the heebie-jeebies.

So, I grabbed my basket and called it a day!

Happy Tuesday!

The Bench

I came across this bench in a local park and loved its simplicity, yet the ornate bird gave it a hint of elegance.  It was tucked away in a private nook bordered by thick, green ivy.

I processed it first in black and white.

And then in color.

Which do you prefer?   Have a great Saturday everyone!

Beach Dreaming...

While I am very much looking forward to fall and cooler temperatures, I still find myself yearning for a trip to the beach - just one last visit until next summer.

So that I can walk along the surf....

And search for seashells...

And watch the seagulls...

And watch the waves roll in under the pier...

Enjoy your Thursday!

Wishing you a sunkissed Tuesday!

This dragonfly was perched facing the sun soaking up the evening rays.  The shot is not as crisp or clear as I would like, but I did not realize that the camera was set to macro mode with the zoom lens extended.  Oh well, can't wait to upgrade to a DSLR!  Plus, I'm still learning......  :)

My Tomato Plants!!

I find it very ironic that my last post was regarding my beloved cherry tomatoes.  They are so pretty, and the plants were full of foliage, new blooms and thriving.  Thriving I tell you!

This past weekend we went away for a work-related retreat sponsored by my husband's company
at a State park (more on that later).  Work for him meant relaxation and fun for me and my youngest son.  It was very nice.   I have a new appreciation for State parks.

But I digress....

After hauling in all of our stuff, checking the mail and phone messages, I headed outside to check my tomato plants. I do not have a true "garden area" and my plants are nestled amongst lantana and other bushes that border our front sidewalk.

To my horror, all I could see were stripped limbs at the tops of the plants! What the heck??

 Naked, upper limbs!

I had a sneaky suspicion of the who the culprit was (tomato worm), but I hate creepy, crawly things!  However, for the well-being of my plants, I had to investigate.  So, I put on my big-girl britches and started looking.   At first, I could not find anything, but then upon closer inspection, I found this:

It was fat and chowing down on my tomato leaves!! Yikes - what to do? Why, grab the camera of course!

I checked the second plant and did not see anything, I searched and searched.  Then, after getting on my knees and searching underneath - I found this one:

He was underneath the leaves munching away - fat and happy like his partner.  There were two of those suckers to deal with.  I am a southern gal and grew up digging for worms for fishing, but as an adult, I really hate touching those things, especially the big fat ones! The male members of our household had grown bored with the worms and were inside watching TV.  It was up to me to get these worms OFF of my plants!

So, I pinched off the stem the first one was attached to.....

And led the second onto on a stick.....

And then, I set them free.......

Free to live, free to just be.....
BUT - they better leave my tomato plants alone!!

Cherry Tomatoes

I absolutely love cherry tomatoes!  I am not an experienced gardner like my father, so I am always excited to see the first blooms.  And, then I cross my fingers and my toes that the squirrels do not eat them!

I also think they are pretty, all snug in their cluster.

And as silly as it sounds, I almost hate to pick them.

But, they taste oh so yummy!
Happy Friday and have a great weekend!

Squirrel

My husband was at home today eating lunch and he saw this squirrel in our back yard.  I laughed out loud and thought that he looked like a squirrel "Santa Claus! "  He was taking the stuffing out of one of our dog's old toys.  I grabbed the camera and took these pics through our back door window and then outside when he was done.   It was so much fun to watch!

This squirrel was really into his job and so darned cute!

He looks like a Santa squirrel here.

Taking off to go fluff his nest.

He ran right up into his nest - those babies are gonna have a nice, soft bed!

Poor ole abandoned puppy toy....

We live in a neighborhood and my neighbor absolutely HATES squirrels.  He is often in his backyard shooting them - or trying to trap them.

GO-SQUIRRELS-GO!!

and that's all I have to say 'bout that.....

Mushrooms....

MUSHROOMS...

It has been raining a lot for the past few days and between the storms that have dumped tons of rain, we have had such hot and humid weather that makes you want to cry "MOMMA - do something."  I recently noticed that we have an assortment of mushrooms that have cropped up.  While I DETEST this wicked weather pattern, they seem to flourish and like it just fine!

This one is particularly groovy and pyschodelic....
This one seems so delicate and stands alone in the middle of the lawn.

Something has been munching on this one!

Evening Sunset

After a rainy morning, I went out to a local park to shoot some evening pictures and was rewarded by  golden evening sunlight.  Very peaceful!

Getting there...

I'm slowly but surely getting my blog together.  SOOOO much to learn for one who is not used to it.  Please be patient and visit from time to time - I'm hoping it will be worth your while.   Leave any comments or useful information that you can think of for a brand-new blogger.   Any and all are welcome!

Until tomorrow!
